TAM - Wildenrath AB 5 till 14 June 1978
During this Tactical Air Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG33, Dutch Air Force 306 squadron, and Belgium Air Force 10Wing.. One of the participating pilots, Keith McDonald, who was the captain of the Canadian team, stated: "The Canadian Team included seven other pilots. The reason there were eight pilots is that the TAM 78 was both a weapons competition and a multi-nation exercise testing interoperability. Thus, for the first week of the TAM, all nations operated in a manner similar to Red Flag, and/or Maple Flag. The second week was the "tactical weapons competition" week. That is the reason that we Canadians changed the paint scheme of the tail from camouflage the first week, to a very noticeable white tail with red maple leaf for the week of competition. The total Canadian Team had pilots from all three Baden Soellingen squadrons. Two from 439 Squadron, 4 from 441 squadron and 2 from 421 squadron. The competition team included two pilots from 439 Squadron, one from 421 squadron and two from 441 squadron. Also, the Canadian team was awarded the Wildenrath Trophy from the Station Commander at Wildenrath for the "best" national contingent at the TAM." Beneath a photo of FX65 of 10W while taxying at Wildenrath (thanks to Peter Doll), a photo showing four Belgium Starfighter lining up for mass takeoff (thanks to Cor van Gent) and a photo showing FX60 and FX100 arriving at Wildenrath June 5th. Another photo shows F-104G 26+11 taxying to the runway on 8 June and finally a photo taken by Manfred Faber on June 5th show two Dutch Starfighters (D-8059 and D-8273) ready for take off. Patch photos thanks to Eddie Duggan and a zapp on 22+05 photographed by Gunter Grondstein. The three pictures inside the third row were taken by Kurt Thomsen and again Gunter Grondstein.
