Last month, September 2024, there came news from Wittmund about the two old gateguards. Both the F-86E (JA+112) and F-104G (20+86) were dismantled from their bases in Wittmund in front of the squadron headquarters after having been used as preserved guard for 50 years (it arrived from Erding in 1974). Unfortunately, the two aircraft are in very poor condition with heavy corrosion and there was no interest from anyone to attempt to restore them. Both are too much gone... , so the plan is to scrap both aircraft soon.
The other two preserved aircraft on the airbase are in a much better shape because these are treated well and held most of the time inside the hangar. These are F-86E (JA+106) and F-104G (24+85). Both are currently being repainted and preserved and will then be displayed in front of the headquarters building.
