F-104J and F-104DJ Starfighters and their ACM participations


On this page an overview of all the events in which Starfighters played their own roles in Japan during the famous colorful ACM meets. Most of these meets have been held during Autumn every year starting with 1979. Starfighters participated until 1984. Beneath an overview of all the known Starfighters during these meets all carrying exotic colorschemes.

This use of specific colorschemes during the ACM exercises have been initiated late 70s by 6th Koukuudan Hikougun commander, Colonel (then Captain) Nishigaki Yoshi.

ACM (1) - Autumn 1979

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

202 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8528 - carrying a very rough camouflage ACM scheme
F-104J 46-8570 - carrying a 3-tone grey colour scheme
F-104J 46-8604 - carrying a yellow-blue band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8606 - carrying a dark grey band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8609 - carrying a dark grey band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8654 - carrying a blue band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8661 - carrying a dark grey (blue?) band over its central fuselage
Aircraft 8609 was seen with these ACM colors in December 1979.

203 Hikotai :
F-104J 46-8641 - carrying a red-white band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8650 - carrying a red-white band over its central fuselage
F-104J 56-8673 - carrying a red-white band over its central fuselage
F-104J 76-8687 - carrying a red-white band over its central fuselage
Aircraft 8641 and 8673 were seen with ACM colors in October 1979 and 8687 was seen at homebase Chitose with these markings on 15 October 1979.

204 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8546 - carrying an orange band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8593 - carrying an orange band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8594 - carrying an orange or red band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8613 - carrying an orange or red band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8648 - carrying an orange band over its central fuselage
F-104J 56-8669 - carrying an orange band over its central fuselage
F-104J 56-8677 - carrying an orange band over its central fuselage
Aircraft 8594 was seen with this markings in October 1979.

205 Hikotai :
F-104J 26-8507 - carrying a yellow-blue band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8591 - carrying a yellow-blue band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8646 - carrying a yellow-blue band over its central fuselage
F-104J 46-8657 - carrying a yellow-blue band over its central fuselage
Aircraft 8646 was seen with these ACM colors at Komaki AB on 14 October 1979.


ACM (2) - Autumn 1980

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

F-104J 36-8528 - carrying a top dark blue and bottom light blue color scheme
F-104J 36-8532 - carrying a 2-tone grey colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 36-8532 - carrying a 2-tone grey colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 36-8547 - carrying a 2-tone grey colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 36-8557 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 36-8558 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 46-8570 - carrying a 2-tone blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 46-8587 - carrying a top dark blue and bottom light blue color scheme
F-104J 76-8684 - carrying a 2-tone grey colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 76-8690 - carrying a top dark blue and bottom light blue color scheme
F-104J 76-8710 - carrying a top dark blue and bottom light blue color scheme
F-104DJ 26-5007 - carrying red bands around its fuselage
F-104DJ 36-5018 - carrying red bands around its fuselage
Both aircraft F-104J 8570 and F-104DJ 5018 were seen with ACM markings at Tsuiki AB on 9 November 1980. Aircraft 8690 was already seen with this blue ACM scheme on 13 May 1980 (??).

203 Hikotai :
F-104J 46-8621 - carrying a light blue shadered scheme around middle fuselage
F-104J 56-8672 - carrying a light blue shadered scheme around middle fuselage
F-104J 76-8692 - carrying a light blue shadered scheme around middle fuselage
F-104DJ 26-800? - carrying orange bands around fuselage
Aircraft 8621, 8672 and 8692 were seen with ACM colors in November 1980.

204 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8516 - carrying a two-tone blue camouflage scheme and Oliv-drab later.
F-104J 36-8565 - carrying an oliv-drab color scheme
F-104J 46-8602 - carrying a three-tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 46-8637 - carrying a three-tone grey blue camouflage scheme
F-104J 76-8702 - carrying a two-tone blue camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 36-5012 - carrying orange bands around its fuslage
Autumn 1980 aircraft 8516 was seen wearing a two tone blue camouflage scheme and on 10 November 1980 it was seen wearing a different, oliv-drab overall, color scheme. This latter day, 10 November 1980, also aircraft 8565 was seen wearing this oliv-drab ACM scheme.

207 Hikotai :
F-104J 46-8570 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 76-8700 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104J 76-8705 - carrying a 2-tone light blue scheme + fake canopy - lateron grey
F-104J 76-8706 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colour scheme + fake canopy
F-104DJ 46-5007 - carrying orange-silver bands around its fuselage
F-104DJ 46-5008 - carrying orange-white bands around its fuselage
In Autumn 1980 aircraft 8705 was seen wearing a two-tone light blue colorscheme while on 10 November 1980 it was seen in some kind of grey-sprayed colorscheme.

ACM (3) - Autumn 1981

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

F-104J 36-8518 - carrying a dark blue - light grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8524 - carrying a 2-tone light blue colorscheme with fake canopy
F-104J 36-8526 - carrying a khaki light grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8563 - carrying an F16 camo color scheme
F-104J 36-8570 - carrying an F16 camo color scheme
F-104J 46-8587 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 56-8661 - carrying a beige-khaki camouflage scheme
F-104J 56-8710 - carrying an F-16 camo color scheme
Aircraft 8518 was seen flying in ACM colors on 15 November 1981. Also aircraft 8587 and 8661 were seen with ACM colors in November while 8424, 8526, 8587 and 8710 still had these colors applied in March 1982 and 8526 even till January 1983!!

203 Hikotai :
F-104J 46-8621 - carrying a dark grey shadered colorscheme on top and aft fuselage

F-104J 36-8516 - carrying a green-khaki camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8531 - carrying a green-khaki camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8538 - carrying a green-khaki camouflage scheme
F-104J 46-8637 - carrying an oliv-drab color scheme
Aircraft 8516, 8531 and 8538 were seen in ACM colors on 15 November 1981. Aircraft 8537 still had this ACM outfit applied in March 1982.

207 Hikotai :
F-104J 26-8506 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme also covering sq markings
F-104J 36-8511 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme
Aircraft 8506 was seen in ACM colors in November 1981.

ACM (4) - Autumn 1982

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

202 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8528 - carrying a khaki beige camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8558 - carrying a 2 tone blue color scheme
F-104J 36-8563 - carrying an F16 camo color scheme
F-104J 46-8570 - carrying a 2-tone light blue color scheme with fake canopy
F-104J 56-8684 - carrying a light blue light grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 56-8710 - carrying a light blue light grey camouflage scheme
Aircraft 8570 was seen in ACM colors on 6 June and in October 1982 while 8558 and 8710 were seen in October 1982. Aircraft 8563 carried an F-16 camouflage scheme just as in 1981. It was seen in October and November 1982.

203 Hikotai :
F-104J 76-8682 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme with snake badges
F-104J 76-8683 - carrying a 2 tone grey color scheme
F-104J 76-8685 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 76-8689 - carrying a 2 tone grey camouflage scheme
Aircraft 8682, 8685 and 8689 were seen in ACM colors early August 1982 while aircraft 8683 was already seen in June with ACM colors.

204 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8526 - carrying a khaki-beige camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8531 - carrying a dark oliv-drab overall color scheme
F-104J 36-8538 - carrying a khaki-blue-green combination colour scheme
F-104J 36-8563 - carrying a 2-tone blue camouflage scheme
F-104J 46-8637 - carrying a dark oliv-drab overall color scheme
F-104J 46-8677 - carrying a dark-light combination colour scheme
Aircraft 8526 was seen in ACM colors in March 1982 and also flying on 22 November 1982. Aircraft 8531 was seen in ACM colors in March 1982, while aircraft 8538, 8637 amd 8677 were seen already in ACM colors in January, maybe still carrying the scheme from the 1981 meet?? Finally aircraft 8563 was seen flying in ACM colors in October 1982.

207 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8511 - carrying a blue-grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 46-8616 - carrying a 2-tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 46-5008 - carrying an olive-green camouflage scheme
Aircraft 8511 was seen flying in ACM colors at Komatsu AB on 8 June 1982 and F-104DJ 5008 was seen in olive-green ACM colors at Komatsu AB on 17 August 1982.

ACM (5) - Autumn 1983

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

203 Hikotai :
F-104J 56-8673 - carrying red-white bands around its fuselage.

204 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8557 - carrying a 2-tone light grey camouflage scheme
F-104J 36-8558 - carrying a dark grey overall scheme covering also squadron markings
F-104DJ 26-5004 - carrying a khaki-light grey camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 26-5006 - carrying a khaki-light blue color scheme
Aircraft 8557 was seen with ACM colors in August 1983 while F-104DJ 5006 was still seen with these 1983 ACM colors until at least 7 February 1984..

207 Hikotai :
F-104J 46-8635 - carrying a two-tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 46-5008 - carrying a 3-tone grey camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 36-5017 - carrying a green-khaki camouflage scheme
Aircraft 5008 was seen with ACM colors in November 1983.

ACM (6) - Autumn 1984

Known participants during this first ACM meet were:

204 Hikotai :
F-104J 36-8538 - carrying a green-khaki camouflage scheme
F-104DJ 26-5006 - carrying a khaki-light blue color scheme
Aircraft F-104J 8538 was seen with these ACM colors on 22 October 1984 while 26-5006 remained its outfit from 1983 till 1984.
