F-104 Starfighters and their TWM (AIRTAC) & TAM participations

On this page an overview of all the events in which Starfighters played their own roles. From 1978 the Tactical Weapon Meets and Royal Flush meets had been merged into big Tactical Air Meet.


TWM 1 - St Dizier AB 29 June till 6 July 1962

TWM 2 - Hopsten AB 15 till 28 June 1963

TWM 3 - Chaumont AB 16 till 31 July 1964

It was the first time that CF-104s were participating in a TWM exercise. In total two CF-104s were seen.

TWM 4 - Chaumont AB 11 till 25 June 1965

During this AFCENT Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the Canadian 427squadron (3W Zweibrucken and German Air Force JBG31 and JBG33. It was the first time the Germans participated in this exercise.The Canadian team was led by Wing Commander Bill Bliss, and was very successfull. As part of the 4ATAF (which won) the RCAF won the Best Nation award, and flight lieutenant Frioult was the top individual scrorer.
Other pilots inside this succesfull team were Fl Lt. Hyndman, Dow and Hull. German JBG31 pilot Lt Kmonitzek (2nd Starffel) won 2nd place in the Nuclear Attack role. Other pilots from JBG31 were Hptm Angermann, Hptm S Heltzel, Oblt Weiss and OFW Kaiser. The 4th ATAF won the exercise (including JBG31 and the Canadians).

TWM 5 - Chaumont AB 10 till 24 June 1966

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31, JBG33, JBG34 and the Dutch Air Force 311sq, Belgium Air Force 10Wing and RCAF 1st Air Division. The exercise was also known as "Air-TWM". Again 4ATAF won the meet overall. The Canadians had the 2nd best team and Fl.Lt L.B. Marion of 421 squadron won the top individual honours of having the highest single score in the competition.

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31 and JBG33 and also from the Belgium Air Force 10Wing and Canadian Armed Forces 1AD.

TWM 7 - Jever AB 7 till 21 June 1968

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31 and JBG33, Dutch Air Force 312sq, Canadian Armed Forces 1st Air Division and Belgium Air Force 10Wing. JBG31 pilot Hptm Buckner won the individual LADD Trophy and JBG31 pilot Major Kukuck won the individual LAY-DOWN Trophy.
On the 20th of June a participating aircraft FX36 crashed at Bentheim near Nordhorn range during shooting-exercises. Pilot Capt Jacques Huygen was sadly killed. Aircraft seen during the meet include:

TWM 8 - Norvenich AB in June 1969

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the Canadians, the Belgians, the German Air Force JBG33 and Dutch Air Force 312sq. Aircraft seen during the meet include:

TWM 9 - Bitburg AFB - Spangdahlem AFB 1 till 13 June 1970

During this Tactical Weapons Meet (also mentioned "AIRTAC") Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG34, Dutch Air Force 311 and 312 squadron, Belgium 10Wing and Canadian Armed Forces 1CAG (421sq?).

TWM 10 - Florennes AB 18 till 29 September 1972

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31 and JBG33 and from the Dutch Air Force 312sq while the Canadian Armed Forces 1CAG acted as the jury. The German team, led by Oberstleutnant Schmidt included Oberstleutnant Schmitz-Irmer, Oberleutnant Leve, Oberleutnant Stein and Ober-stabsfeldwebel Gerking. Oblt. Jackie Stein became "NATO-Ace" while Oberstleutnant Schmitz-Irmer ended as Nr.3. Starfighter 26+48 (JBG34) was seen as well at Florennes during this exercise but likely as visitor. One of the Dutch Starfighters (D-6700)received a lot of zapps on its front fuselage during the exercise.

During this Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31 and JBG34 and also from the Canadian 1CAG based at this Sollingen location. Aircraft seen during this meet were:

During this "final" Tactical Weapons Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31 and JBG32 and from the Canadian Armed Forces 1CAG. Some believe 306sq also participated during this meet (like RF-104G D-8143)

TAM - Ramstein AFB 20 June till 3 July 1980

During this Tactical Air Meet Starfighters have been seen from the German Air Force JBG31, JBG32, the Dutch Air Force 306 squadron and Canadian Armed Forces 1CAG. Some aircraft operated from Zweibrucken including the Dutch RF-104Gs. The Canadian squadron won the Walker Trophy for the best rocket shooting performance while the Dutch Starfighter squadron won the Wildenrath Trophy for their achievement to bring all teams close together and accomplish a real TAM team spirit. This was especially because they gave away lots of coffee, saté and candy's.
