Accident Reports: September 26th, 1973 was a very tragic day for Rimini Air Base. This day they lost a dear college and friend when F-104S MM6813 / 5-31 was lost in a crash into Milano Marritima, near homebase Rimini. The pilot, Capt. Mario Pinna was tragically killed.
The investigation revealed that the accident was caused by a pilot error, likely Capt Pinna was a victim of disorientation. The aircraft was the first F-104S for 23 Gruppo and handed over to the squadron on 9 March 1973.

Not many photos are known about this F-104S Starfighter. Here two photos of the aircraft taken in the landingarea of Rimini on 17 July 1973 by Hans Koning. On top while breaking off its landing and the other photo showing the aircraft on finals. It was the first delivered F-104 to 23 Gruppo at Rimini. (Hans Koning)
