12808 / 104808

d/d dec62, 1st AirDiv (1963-1969), 1st CAG (1970-mar86), wfu 06mar86, to Turkey 18mar86

Note: This Starfighter went to Europe immediately after manufacturing and delivery. It was seen early 60s with 427 squadron, in 1966 with 422 squadron all with the old code "12808". All aircraft received new serials when the system changed around May 1970. With its new serial "104808" it was seen a lot outside its homebase Baden-Sollingen. A few examples are visits to Eindhoven Air Base (August 1971), Leeuwarden Air Base (April 1974 and May 1977), Lakenheath Air Base (April 1974, via Leeuwarden), Bitburg Air Base (Tiger Meet 1974), Metz Apt (June 1981), Hahn Air Base (August 1981), Jever Air Base (TLP exercise March and December 1985), Fairford Air Base (IAT in July 1985) and West-Malling (1985). In the 70s and 80s the aircraft were operated in one pool and every squadron just got aircraft assigned on availability. This means although somethimes squadron markings were carried they officially did not belong to that particular squadron.

62-808

d/d 18mar86, 8th AJU (mar86-apr94), preserved as gateguard Diyarbakir Air Base

Note: This Starfighter was seen at Rimini Air Base, Italy during a squadron exchange in September 1987. it still had the old Canadian green-grey colorscheme with code "8-808". It is unknown when it exactly received the traditional Turkish 80s camouflage scheme but at least it was seen wearing it for the first time in August 1989, operated by 182nd Filo. In August 1991 it was seen for the last time outside Turkey when it flew at Trapani Air Base, Italy. After phase-out it was restored completely at Eskisehir (seen in September 2000) and became a gateguard at its former homebase Diyarbakir, with code "8-808". We are still looking for good photos taken of this Starfighter as gateguard!!!
