Belgium F-104's
and how it all ended...

Like a lot of other NATO allies also Belgium has used the F-104G as their Air Force backbone aircraft. In total the Belgium Air Force received 100 single seat F-104Gs of which 25 were funded by MAP, and 12 dual-seat TF-104Gs of which 3 were funded by MAP. From 1979 onwards the F-104G was replaced by the General Dynamics F-16 fighter. After retirement, 18 aircraft have been transferred to Turkey mid 80s while some other aircraft have found their way via the US to Taiwan, used for spare-parts. Others remained in Belgium becoming display aircraft, instructional aircraft and even a few were scrapped. Here an overview of what really happened to the surviving Belgium aircraft and at the end you will find an interesting photostory provided by Ron Telford.

Four squadrons have operated the F-104G and TF-104G aircraft:

1st Wing – (All-Weather Interception) based at Beauvechain/Bevekom
349th “MORNING STARS” Smaldeel (November 1963 – March 1980)
350th “VIKING” Smaldeel (March 1963 – October 1981)
THE SLIVERS – This famous stuntteam operated by 1st Wing (70s-80s).

10th Wing – (Tactical Fighter-Bombing) based at Kleine Brogel
23rd “DEVIL” Smaldeel (April 1964 – December 1982)
31st “TIGER” Smaldeel (June 1963 – October 1983)

From 1979 onwards the F-104G was replaced by the General Dynamics F-16 fighter. In total 37 percent of the Starfighter fleet was lost during its operational career. Thirty-nine F-104Gs and two TF-104Gs. This ratio is not including the initial loss of the FX27 by SABCA which was lateron replaced by a new one. Beneath an overview of all the Belgium survivers and their fate after being withdrawn from operational use. Most aircraft ended up at Koksijde Air Base on storage for possible foreign buyers. However after the transfer to Turkey of some MAP related aircraft the stored aircraft encountered a lot of corrosion due to the nearby sea and after a while these were mainly sold for spare parts for the Taiwanese Air Force after shipment to the US in October 1990.

The tails of former Belgium Starfighters FX78 and FX85 were seen dumped at Weelde for a number of years.

Beneath an interesting photo story taken by Ron Telford during the dismantling of the Koksijde stored Starfighters. It is sad to see these birds come to an end and some being prepared to be shipped to the USA. All the aircraft which stayed in Belgium were stripped including the engines which were shipped in seperate special containers. The photos, which were all taken between April and July 1989, are very interesting in a historical point of view and for that reason published on this page..

koksijde

A number of Starfighters ready to be dismantled.

Koksijde

Here the on-board computers are removed from the Starfighter FX02 and also the wing attachements are dismantled. The radar and radome have already been removed.

Koksijde

Here an other shot from the scene. The weather was very good in 1989 so the activities took place outside a lot. This aircraft was not selected to go to the USA and so the aircraft parts were taken out to be shipped to the USA in stead..

Koksijde

After the radar, radome and also computers had been removed from the FX02 it became clear that the engine was a lot heavier then the front so the aircraft fell on its back.

Koksijde

Here some activities to get the FX02 back on its nose wheel again which succeeded at the end.

Koksijde

Here Ron is starting with the removal of the ejection seat from aircraft FX83 to be able to access also the cockpit area for removal of the avionics. Also this FX83 stayed in Belgium and got its interior removed for foreign spares.

Koksijde

Another shot of the ejection seat removal from the aircraft FX83..

Koksijde

This photo shows the FX83 after it was completely technically dismantled. No avionics, seat, computers and engine are inside anymore.

Koksijde

F-104G FX52 is getting its tailfin removed. The tailwing was already dismantled. Also the FX52 was selected to be used for spare-parts removal only.

Koksijde

F-104G FX52 tailfin being removed. The FX52 was used as test aircraft to find the best way of dismantling the aircraft's fin of aircraft which would be shipped to the US.

Koksijde

F-104G FX93, also completely dismantled (empty) is seen heer parked next to a few C-51 cargo aircraft (ready to be scrapped). It was one of many aircraft which did not go to the USA.

Koksijde

More aircraft are waiting to be dismantled. It was quite a project to get alle these 104s done.

Koksijde

This line-up of Starfighters show aircraft which have already been selected to be transported to the USA.

Koksijde

Another shot of the line-up of aircraft which were selected to stay in Belgium. Left aircraft FX94 and FX76 and right aircraft FX47. All their interiors and engines have been removed.

Koksijde

Aircraft selected to go to the USA got their serials sprayed over and were completely dismantled to fit in containers.

Koksijde

Transporting the wings needed special treatment.

Koksijde

TF-104G FC10, FC11 and another two-seater were being prepared inside the main hangar for shipment to the US. Soon their serials would be sprayed over.

Koksijde

Here the FX83 is seen with its tail removed to be able to get the J79 engine out. All engines were shipped to the US.

Koksijde

Here another shot of aircraft FX89 being dismantled for spare-parts. The FX89 itself stayed in Belgium and has been scrapped lateron. Stuff which was removed included the actuators, computers, radar and HUD systems.

Koksijde

Two aircraft (F-104G and TF-104G) being prepared for transportation to the US. Note that the serials have already been sprayed over.

Koksijde

Also cockpits were completely stripped. Here a photo prior stripping of an F-104G. This aircraft is likely FX83.

Koksijde

Here the same cockpit after stripping. Not much left besides the cables. Ejection seat and computers are gone as well.

Koksijde

Ron and collegue busy dismantling F-104G FX89. Note the guy on the location were once the cockpit instruments could be found..

Koksijde

Interesting photo showing a Sea King being washed after a sortie and in front a number of J-79 engines waiting to be transported by a lorry to Charleroi. Note that the engines have been packaged in special container-pods.

After arrival in Taiwan it became clear that the aircraft were not in good health anymore and so they were only used for spare parts.
